The setup I use is a very simple one with an Audix i-5 on the snare, a Shure Beta 52 in the bass, an SM57 on the hi-hat, and an Audio Technica single point stereo for a room mic. I run them into Garageband for recording and only do some minor EQ tweaks and add some reverb. By no means am I a recording engineer, but the ease of getting great sounds is evidenced by the samples below. To get a great recorded sound, you have to start with great acoustic sound! I played all the samples.
